We run a CO₂ laser, so we can't cut metal — we'd rather tell you now than waste your time. We can engrave anodised aluminium, glass and slate beautifully, but if your job needs steel or aluminium cut through, we'll point you to someone who can.

Maker's Edge Laser Co. was born out of a simple frustration: high-quality laser cutters are incredible tools, but the upfront cost puts them out of reach for most small businesses and individual makers.
Based at Port Sorell on Tasmania's beautiful North-West Coast, we make professional laser cutting accessible through flexible leasing — putting serious capability in your hands without the serious price tag.
We work with schools running Design & Technology and STEAM programs, sign makers going digital, craft studios scaling up, and community workshops that want serious kit without needing someone on staff to look after it.
The lease is the whole point: it's an operating cost, not a capital purchase, so there's no business case to fight through — and when the tube reaches the end of its life, that's our problem, not yours.

SUSTAINABILITY
We're a one-person workshop, not a factory, so we don't hold audited environmental targets — and we'd rather say that plainly than imply otherwise. Here is what we can actually stand behind.
MATERIALS — THE BIGGEST LEVER
Most of what we cut is reclaimed or recycled. A good deal of the stock arrives as somebody else's waste — offcuts from local cabinetmakers and builders, and salvaged timber that would otherwise have been burnt or landfilled. Every job is nested to fill the sheet before it's cut: less bought, less thrown out, same finished work.
OFFCUTS DON'T GET BINNED
Offcuts are sorted and racked by size rather than tipped in a bin. The small pieces become coasters, keyrings, test cuts and the inner layers of the layered maps. Timber genuinely past use goes to kindling. Extraction dust is separated out instead of going to general waste, acrylic offcut goes back for recycling, and cardboard and paper are recycled.
THE MACHINE
The Koenig K0906 runs on standard single-phase mains — no three-phase supply and no industrial plant behind it. The tube is good for around 10,000 hours before it needs replacing, so one tube covers thousands of pieces. Extraction and the compressor run only while the machine is actually cutting, and work is batched so it's warmed and run once rather than fired up again and again across the week.
PACKAGING
Recycled kraft cartons, recycled tissue, paper tape. No expanded polystyrene and no plastic void fill at all. The retail carton is the gift box, so it isn't one more layer for the customer to throw away.
WHO DOES THE WORK
Every piece is made by Jeremy Williams in our own workshop, under Australian workplace law. No subcontracted production, no outworkers, no offshore assembly. If we take on casual help as the volume grows, they go on Australian award terms.
WHERE IT COMES FROM
Tasmanian timbers through Tasmanian merchants, plus reclaimed and salvaged stock collected around the North-West. Frames are made here rather than bought in. Birch plywood and MDF come through Australian distributors. Cast acrylic and casting resin are the two things not made in Australia at origin — both bought through established Australian distributors, who report under the Modern Slavery Act, rather than direct from unverified overseas sellers. Oils and packaging are Australian.
WHAT WE DON'T HAVE
No ISO 14001, no B Corp, no FSC chain-of-custody. For a workshop this size the audit and upkeep cost is out of all proportion to the turnover, and we'd rather say so than dress it up. What we can do instead is document material origin, supplier and reclaimed content for any batch we supply, and have someone check it.
We also don't hold audited emissions targets. One person, one machine, standard mains power — the honest description is a low-draw operation, not a measured one.
And one thing that genuinely can't be recycled: cured resin offcut. That's part of why the card stock finish is offered as an equal option rather than a lesser one, and why we're happy to supply the card version on its own.
Buying for a business, a school or a council? We'll set measurable reduction targets as part of a supply agreement, sign a supplier code of conduct, fill in a modern slavery questionnaire, and report against whatever framework your team already uses. Of the formal schemes, FSC chain-of-custody for the timber is the one most relevant to what we make — ask and we'll talk about a realistic timeline for it.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
No — and we'd rather say so up front. The K0906 is a 100W CO₂ laser, which cuts and engraves non-metals: acrylic, MDF, plywood, solid timber, leather, card, fabric, cork and rubber. It can engrave, but not cut, glass, slate and anodised aluminium. Cutting steel or aluminium needs a fibre laser, which we don't run.
We accept SVG, DXF, AI, PDF and CDR vector files. For engraving, high-resolution PNG, JPG and BMP work well. If you're not sure about your files, send them through and we'll check them for free — and if you've only got a sketch, we can draw it up for you.
We're based at Port Sorell, twenty minutes east of Devonport, and regularly cover the North-West Coast — Devonport, Latrobe, Ulverstone, Burnie, Penguin and Sheffield — plus Launceston. Further afield can be arranged, just ask.
